Arran Fine Foods Caramelised Red Onion Chutney Recalled Over Metal Pieces

May 28, 2026
FSA-PRIN-26-2026

Chutney is the sort of thing that sits in a cupboard for months, which is exactly why this recall is worth a look even if you bought it a while ago. Fox's Burton's Companies (FBC) UK is recalling Arran Fine Foods Caramelised Red Onion Chutney because it may contain pieces of metal, making it unsafe to eat. The affected dates run all the way out to 2029, so a jar you picked up to go with the cheeseboard could easily still be in date. If you've got one, this is a quick check that's worth doing now.

What's Affected

  • Product: Arran Fine Foods Caramelised Red Onion Chutney
  • Pack sizes: 195g and 1.35kg
  • Best-before dates (195g): 25 November 2028, 07 January 2029, 14 January 2029, 15 January 2029, 26 January 2029, 27 January 2029, 02 February 2029 and 03 February 2029
  • Best-before dates (1.35kg): 28 April 2027, 29 April 2027, 07 July 2027, 28 July 2027, 09 August 2027, 16 August 2027 and 17 August 2027

The best-before date is printed on the jar. Both the small 195g jars and the catering-sized 1.35kg tubs are included, so check whichever size you've bought.

What You Should Do

  • Don't eat it. Metal fragments in a spoonable product like chutney can cause cuts to the mouth or throat, or damage to the digestive tract if swallowed. You won't spot the difference by looking, so don't risk a taste test.
  • Return it to the store where you bought it for a full refund.
  • Already eaten some? If you've felt any pain or noticed anything sharp in your mouth, throat or stomach, see your GP and mention the possibility of physical contamination.
  • Bought it for the catering trade? The 1.35kg size is the sort that ends up in pub kitchens and delis, so if you serve this on a menu, pull it from use straight away.

Why Metal Ends Up in Food

Physical contamination recalls like this usually trace back to the machinery. A worn blade, a loose bolt, or a fragment shed during mixing or filling can all end up in the jar. Most factories run metal detectors on the line to catch precisely this. No system is perfect, though, and when something slips through, a precautionary recall is the responsible move. The wide spread of best-before dates here hints that the problem hit several production runs rather than one bad batch, which explains why so many date codes are listed.

Chutneys and preserves are easy to forget about at the back of a cupboard, so it's worth a proper rummage if you buy this brand. For the latest on what's been pulled from shelves, the FSA alerts page is the place to keep an eye on.
