The crumb on a crumbed ham is doing more than you'd expect, and that's the problem. Divilly's is recalling its No Added Nitrite Crumbed Ham after the product was found to contain wheat (gluten) that isn't declared on the label. The breadcrumb coating is the obvious culprit, but coeliacs and gluten-sensitive shoppers rely on the ingredients list to flag it, and on this batch, that didn't happen.
A single batch is affected. Check the back of the pack, if the batch code reads 20163983 and the use-by is 4 June 2026, it's part of the recall. Other Divilly's products aren't affected.
If you have coeliac disease or a gluten allergy or intolerance:
It might seem strange to recall a product where the allergen is, in a sense, hiding in plain sight, of course a crumbed ham has breadcrumbs, and of course breadcrumbs contain wheat. But UK allergen rules don't allow for assumptions like that. The 14 major allergens have to be clearly listed and emphasised on the ingredients label every single time, regardless of how predictable they might seem from the product name. That's because allergen labelling is meant to work for everyone, including the person grabbing the pack one-handed in a hurry, the new diagnosis still learning what to look for, and the relative buying lunch for a coeliac niece they don't see often.
If you regularly buy cooked meats or charcuterie, it's worth a quick check of the FSA alerts page now and then, and signing up for their email alerts means you'll hear about issues like this without having to remember to look.
