Tesco Special Fried Rice Recalled Over Undeclared Wheat (Gluten)

January 26, 2026
FSA-AA-08-2026

Rice feels like a safe bet if you're avoiding gluten, which is exactly why this one catches people out. Tesco is recalling its Special Fried Rice because the product contains wheat, and that gluten isn't declared on the label. Got a pack with a use-by of 2 February 2026? Check the fridge before your next stir-fry.

What's Affected

  • Product: Tesco Special Fried Rice
  • Pack size: 350g
  • Use-by date: 02 February 2026

The recall covers packs carrying that single use-by date. Check the front or top of the pack to see if yours is included.

What You Should Do

If you have a wheat allergy, gluten intolerance or coeliac disease:

  • Don't eat it. Eating gluten can trigger anything from stomach cramps and bloating to a serious allergic reaction, and for someone with coeliac disease it causes real damage to the gut lining even when symptoms feel mild.
  • Return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. You don't need a receipt.
  • Already eaten some? If you're feeling unwell with symptoms like stomach pain, bloating, diarrhoea or nausea, speak to your GP. For a severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face or throat, use your adrenaline auto-injector if you carry one and call 999.
  • No wheat or gluten issues in the house? The rice is safe to eat. The recall is only about the missing allergen warning, not about contamination or spoilage.

For more information, Tesco can be contacted through its help and contact page at tesco.com/help/contact.

Why "Special" Fried Rice Is Easy to Trip Over

Plain rice is naturally gluten-free, so a lot of shoppers reasonably assume a fried rice product is too. The trouble is that "special" fried rice often includes added ingredients, sauces, seasonings or flavourings that can carry wheat, and that's exactly where the gluten can sneak in. Soy sauce is a common culprit in this kind of dish. When the label doesn't flag it, there's no way for a shopper to know. If you buy a lot of ready-made meals or chilled side dishes and you're managing coeliac disease or an allergy, the FSA alerts page is the best place to stay on top of recalls like this one.
